Match Reports Please click on underlined word at end of each report to bring you back to top of page Courtesy of Martin Gaut Mid-Shropshire Division 4 v Bylet (Home)This time we were looking to give Bylet a good beating after they thrashed us in the Ashton Cup final last year. In the first four we had two winners but we were up on aggregate. The winners were John Potter 21-6, and Celia Ghaut getting yet another win 21-9. The two who lost were Shirley Martin 19-21 and Alan Ghaut 15-21. The middle gave us three more winners, Cliff Cotton 21-19, Neal Buckley 21-9 and our best winner of the night after being the only loser in the last game was Martin Gaut 21-4. The only loser in the middle was John Lycett, 15-21. In the back we had two winners who were very close, Denise Tonks 21-18 and Ian Jones 21-19. The other two in the back lost they were Mike Potter 7-21, and Helen Clee who got very close with a score of 20-21. This
was good result, nothing amazing, but I was happy with a win but it could have
been much worse or much better as well.

By Martin Gaut Mid-Shropshire Division 4 v Maddocks (Away)This was a very tough game for us as we were playing a team who are very good on their home green and they all played it well. From the first four we had only the one winner and that was Celia Ghaut, who is in fantastic form, 21-15. The other scores were; Shirley Martin 13-21, Martin Gaut 14-21and Alan Ghaut 11-21. In the middle it was fairly even with two winners each, ours were Ian Jones 21-7 and John Potter 21-9. The two who lost were Barry Griffin 17-21 and Cliff Cotton 14-21. We had four losers in the back four but none of them played bad. John Lycett lost 3-21, Roy Smith and Denise Tonks both scored 17 and Stuart Clee lost 15-21. Overall
we had only the three winners but they are a very good team and we could have
had a few more winners as three 17 losers. Unlucky and try to get a win in next

Martin Gaut Mid-Shropshire Division 4 v Albrighton (Home)Today was the best home result this year, and I have to say I think that it will be very difficult for us to repeat this kind of team performance again or even go that one step further. We had an amazing star with four winners, Shirley Martin with an amazing 21-4 card; Neal Buckley had also had a great winning 21-8. The other two winners were Alan Ghaut who, played like a machine winning 21-3, and Celia Ghaut winning 21-13. This meant we had all four winners and we were 56 chalks ahead. Now it was to the middle four and they gave us just as good a performance with another four winners. Cliff Cotton won 21-13 and Ian Jones won 21-17. The other two both won 21-10 and they were Roy Smith and Barry Griffin. So now we were 90 points ahead of our visitors and the match was in the bag. The back four brought us our only loser of the night and that was I, Martin Gaut, showing the rest of the team what not to do. I scored 13 but all of the others won and they were John Lycett, 21-11, Denise Tonks, 21-10, and Helen Clee 21-9. This was a very professional and well-executed win, well done everybody! Good luck next game against Maddocks away. Result 14-1 Aggregate +116 By Martin Gaut Mid-Shropshire Division 4 v Newport (Away)This week we were looking to counteract that home defeat to the Bailey with an away win against Newport, and that is exactly what we did on and off the green. After the first four we were two games apiece and losing by 7 shots. The two winners were Helen Clee at number 1, 21-18, and Denise Tonks 21-12. The two losers were Neal Buckley 13-21 and Shirley Martin 10-21. This was a good start and it gave us plenty to build upon. The middle four gave us three winners and this meant that we were 15 chalks up. Our best winner of the night was Alan Ghaut who won 21-9. Barry Griffin won 21-11 and Celia Ghaut just scraped through 21-19 but, Cliff Cotton lost out to the same score 19-21. The back four gave us two more winners and ensured us the win on chalks. The two winners were Johnny Lycett 21-16 and Martin Gaut 21-18. Roy Smith lost 14-21 and Ian Jones scored one more than Roy, 15-21. This was a brilliant result and I am very pleased that have very uickly overcome that defeat at home to the Bailey. Result 10-5 Aggregate +10 By Martin Gaut Mid-Shropshire Division 4 v Sir John Bailey (Home)This game against the Bailey Club is always difficult home or away as they have some very good bowlers, youngsters such as Ann Bradburne and Kris Lewis, but this team also holds a couple of top lady bowlers in Margery Deakin and Marg Bland. We had a good start to the game with three winners in the first four. These winners were Helen Clee beating Marg Bland 21-19, Shirley Martin, who was our joint best winner, 21-9 and Bernard Downes who won 21-14. Cliff Cotton was the only loser of the first four and he scored 14. The middle four gave us only one winner, this was Denise Tonks 21-9. Barry Griffin scored 7, Celia Ghaut got 12 and Alan Ghaut scored one more with 13. This was a bit of a downhill point but it wasn’t too bad and we thought we still had a chance of winning this. But, we were wrong, we didn’t get any more winners in the back four. John Lycett nearly got double figures with 9 and Martin Gaut lost 13-21. John Potter at number 12 lost 14-21 but he had a tough game against Marge Deakin and Roy Smith lost 10-21 to an in form Kris Lewis. Result 4-11 Aggregate -43 By Martin Gaut Mid-Shropshire Division 4 v Much Wenlock (Away)This time we were at the field that is Much Wenlock. We didn’t think that we had much of a chance and this proved to be correct. We got off to a start that included four losers. Two of them scored 5, they were Ian Jones and Cliff Cotton. John Potter scored 9 and Helen Clee came closest with respectable 16. The middle four gave us two winners the winners were Celia Ghaut, 21-14, and Barry Griffin, 21-16. But the two who lost were Alan Ghaut who came close with 18 but Neal Buckley was only just edged out in the end 20-21. The back brought us one more winner, this was Martin Gaut, 21-10, our best winner again on the night. Bernard Downes lost 6-21 to former Wrockite Ian Bates. Roy Smith gathered a respectable 13 Bob Mumford who seams to finish high up the averages every year. Another close loser was Johnny Lycett, 17-21. This was a very tough game and I think it always would be on a green like that one but I think 3 was an adequate result here as they knock the stuffing out of most teams on their field. Result 3-12 Aggregate -57 By Martin Gaut Mid-Shropshire Division 4 v St. Georges at HomeWe had a fairly even start that ended up with two games each and with us 3 up on aggregate. Bernard Downes beat Nick Stacey 21-16, but Neil Martin was beaten out to the same score with a noble effort against Matty Rhodes. Shirley Martin came close losing out 17-21 against junior county bowler Rob Burroughs, and Cliff Cotton, our best winner of the first four put us three chalks up beating Beryl Gaut 21-14. The middle, as the first four, was very tight and it took us to 4 games apiece and gained us 4 more chalks to now be 7 up on aggregate. Stuart Clee came close against Doris Nuttall losing 19-21. Barry Griffin scored 14 against Sybil Rhodes but that was cancelled out by Alan Ghaut’s 21-14 win, which was only just our best winner in the middle as Celia Ghaut won 21-15 against Albert Whitehouse. The back four then had three winners and added 21 to the overall aggregate that meant we won the aggregate by 28. Neal Buckley was the only loser at the back but he did come close, 17-21, against Mirjana Gaut. The other M Gaut in the match was Martin Gaut, for us, and he was our best winner on the night beating Amanda Rhodes 21-9. At number 11 we have to be very grateful that this player played for us at very short notice, as we had to ring her on the night because one of our players informed us of his unavailability at very short notice. Anyway, Jackie Rutter came to play and just scraped through 21-18 against fellow ladies county bowler Alison Cotton. Steady Smithy, Roy Smith, played at number 12 against P Chambers (sorry I couldn’t remember his name) and was our second best winner of the night 21-11. I
would like to say thank you to the team that played and supporters who came for
making me feel at home and helping me out with the measuring and marking of
cards on my first night as captain.
