Match Reports Please click on underlined word at the end of each report to bring you back to the top of the page Courtesy of Neil Martin Woodpeckers recent run of fine form came to an abrupt halt as they were massacred at Maddocks...The woeful Woodies could muster only one winner, that from Dynamic Diana, returning to top form with a 21-11 cracker... Celia was a shade unfortunate 18-21 and Shirley had a really interesting game before losing out 20-21.. Her opponent called for the 19 metre tapes no fewer than eleven times during the contest and each time the length to the Jack was clearly a mark (what was all that about)... But to their credit on the night Maddocks where easily the better team and deserved their victory.... Now where did I put that tape measure ?..........Neil.
Minstertoofarly versus Tree Nibblers, and the persistent precipitation that had engulfed the area all day had surely put the match in doubt, however, on arrival at the Minstertoofarly green, the Tree Nibblers captain insisted to her team there was no reason to cancel the game. "a bit of rain won't hurt you she snapped" "But captain" some of the girls cried in unison "It's up to our ankles" "It's up my knees" a diminutive figure in the corner complained. "Stop moaning and get your wellies on" the captain chided. And so they played, and, despite the atrocious conditions managed five winners and the agg. points by just six chalks and thanks to a couple of borrowed dinghies managed to return safely home to Telford. Some of the names used in this narrative have been changed to protect the innocent and any similarity to the Minsterley v Woodpeckers encounter is purely coincidental... May I just add that the hot supper provided by Minsterley was most impressive and was much appreciated by Woodpeckers.... Neil. Woodpeckers 7 (+21) SJB 5 (Home 5TH June) Woodpeckers forged out a hard fought victory against a talented SJB squad with tip top performances from the whole team... Celia Ghaut, having an excellent season 21-11, Sheila Morgan 21-12, Lorna Williams 21-14 and Denise Tonks 21-18 all played to their best form whilst Rachel Lawrence was desperately unlucky to bow out 20-21.. Shirley Martin yet again won the coppers- not bad for an owd un and all in all an encouraging result but there is still a long way to go- they haven't been to Minsterley yet and how far is that... On a lower note Woodies parade was rained upon when they were bounced out of the Consolation Cup by third Division Oxen at British Sugar beaten by 35 chalks.. it's a funny old game..... Neil Unfortunately I was unable to attend the local derby encounter between Woodpeckers and Wrockwardine Wood Ladies, however, reliable and completely unbiased sources inform me that the Woodies put up a sterling display despite losing 2-10(ahem!) ... Shirley Martin again collected the coppers with a 21-14 cracker and Diana Oliver emerged triumphant from a marathon contest 21-20.. Celia Ghaut had a super game against Marie Rhodes but just got pipped 18-21...Many plaudits rang out for Louise Cotton, her very first season as a member of the bowling fraternity and making her debut for the Woodpeckers she notched double figures against an excellent opponent, well done Louise....Not so well done Woodies exit from the County Cup,beaten by third division Horsehay in the rearranged tie at Coddon club with just 4 chalks separating the teams ..No excuses the Horsehay Ladies fought back well from an early deficit and deserved their victory. .........Neil Woodpeckers V Telepost (Home) 8.5.07 Woodpeckers began their home match with Telepost in fine style, rattling off five winners from the first six games and it looked as though their first win of the season was on the cards, but unfortunately the lovely ladies of Telepost had other ideas and they fought back strongly, winning the last four games, two of them to single figures and of course taking the match points leaving the disappointed Woodies with yet another 5-7 defeat. Earlier, Shirley Martin had recorded a copper winning 21-13 card, closely followed by Sheila Morgan's super 21-14, Rachel Lawrence had a cracking game winning 21-16 and the ultra consistant Ann Rowley a fine 21-15. Captain Celia Ghaut won well 21-14 before the wheel that had wobbled last week finally fell off. Oh well, their next league match is versus Wrockwardine Wood ladies so that should be easier. I jest of course!........ Neil Woodpeckers v Sinclair (away) 1/5/07 Despite losing their first two matches Woodpeckers have, in my opinion made a reasonable start to the season. Another five points from their away fixture at Sinclair and again only losing narrowly augurs well for the future. Our girls had three winners in the first four, Ann Rowley 21-07, Shirley Martin 21-08 and Rachel Lawrence 21-10, a super start, but the wheel started to wobble in the later games, saved only by Celia Ghaut's excellent 21-13 and the finale between Lorna Williams and Holly Bishton going to Lorna 21-17 after a cracking contest. Result..5-7 agg -10 Woodpeckers v Maddocks (home) Woodpeckers opening game of 2007 unfortunately coincided with the onset of the rainy season and they did well to soak up strong pressure from visitors Maddocks. Sheila Morgan and Shirley Martin were excellent winners in the first four 21-10 and 21-12 respectively. Secret weapon Pauline Jones 21-19 and Ann Rowley 21-17 were super victors and Dennis Tonks's terrific 21-19 made the result five games each but Maddocks ladies taking the agg. points by just seven chalks.......Neil
