Shirley Martin    When the Woodpeckers ladies bowls team was formed in the spring of 1997, I was asked if I would like to 'ave a go'. Filled with trepidation I agreed, even though I had never bowled a wood before. Never having been a 'sporty' person I thought I would never get the hang of the game but incredibly won my first debut game 21-20. Fortunately the lady I played had similar ability to my own, ZERO. After many drubbings in the early days I was ready to pack it in on several occasions but thanks to the urging, cajoling and downright bullying of my 'coach' who shall remain anonymous, I persevered and how glad I am that I did. Sheila Morgan and I won the Hadley Ladies doubles in 2002, which was rather special and I have twice represented Shropshire, playing for the Ladies veterans team, which was an honour and a pleasure. Being part of the Woodpeckers who have risen from the lower half of the third division to promotion to the first division in the space of six years has been a smashing experience.

My first attempt at Bowling was at Wellingborough Indoor Bowls Club with my parents and aunt and uncle. I then joined Lilleshall Hall Flat Green Club with my husband Alan in 1987. I came to Wrockwardine Wood when the Woodpeckers first formed, to help out as they were short and have been Captain twice winning the averages several times. I have been selected to play for the county this year. Alan & I have won the Indoor Husband and Wife twice and we bowl at Tamworth Indoor Bowls Club all winter in the Leagues.

Janet Johnston I started my bowling experience some 20 years ago when I was fed up with being a bowls widow and never seeing my husband who was out playing the ‘infernal game’ at least two nights a week and even had the nerve to play on weekends when the opportunity arose!  After some encouragement from this bowl ‘nut’ I started to play firstly for the Coddon Ladies team and then I joined the Woodpeckers some four seasons ago I think it is now and I must say enjoy the game as much today as when I first started.  I found that the camaraderie between the women helped me keep sane on many occasions and helped me through some personal difficult times.  When playing bowls and chatting to the ‘girls’ the mind can relax and enjoy life for a short while.  I owe a big thank you to the game and the lovely team members from all clubs I have encountered over the years.  What a shame that after 20 years of practice I am still not very good at it!! But I enjoy it and as long a the Captain will have me I intend to keep playing and after my wonderful start to the season who knows what heights I may reach this year!!! – don’t get too exited girls.
